Aniridia and Photophobia

Essential Sunglasses for Daily Comfort

What is Aniridia?

The iris is the colored part of the eye that helps control how much light enters the eye. People with aniridia are unfortunately born with a missing or malformed iris and often have very sensitive eyes, especially in bright light. This can lead to vision problems such as blurry vision, cataracts and glaucoma.

A rare genetic condition caused by mutations in the PAX6 gene, aniridia affects 1 in 50,000 to 100,000 people worldwide. As a progressive condition, aniridia must be closely monitored in case of additional complications.

It can be managed by sunglasses and specialized contact lenses.

How Aniridia impacts vision

A healthy iris controls how much light enters the eye, keeping vision focused. The missing or underdeveloped iris causes sensitivity to light, as well as blurred vision and reduced depth perception.

Managing Aniridia with the right tinted lenses

When light hurts your eyes, the right tint makes all the difference.

Amber

Amber lenses are basically built for this. They gently cut brightness without muting your surroundings. Think golden hour all day long. These tints reduce glare, sharpen contrast, and soften the harshness of indoor and outdoor light. They’re warm, calming, and don’t turn your vision muddy…just smooth and manageable.
